Support- Both Standard and Miniature Dachshunds require special care when handling. Dachshunds cannot be held loosely with just one hand. One hand should be around the chest to support the upper body, with the other hand under the rump to support the lower body. Holding a Dachshund with only one hand around the chest lets their long body droop, putting heavy pressure on their delicate backs. Holding the rump limits the extra weight on their backs.
Release- Some dogs, including Dachshunds, simply do not like being handled and will start squirming if they are held. Never let your Dachshund jump from your arms to the floor. Many back injuries occur because the Dachshund has made a high jump.
